Realization utility

چکیده

A number of authors have suggested that investors may derive utility from realizing gains and losses on assets that they own. We present a model of this “realization utility,” analyze its predictions, and show that it can shed light on a number of puzzling facts. These include the disposition effect, the poor trading performance of individual investors, the higher volume of trade in rising markets, the effect of historical highs on the propensity to sell, the individual investor preference for volatile stocks, the low average return of volatile stocks, and the heavy trading associated with highly valued assets. ∗We thank Daniel Benjamin, Patrick Bolton, John Campbell, Lauren Cohen, Erik Eyster, Simon Gervais, Bing Han, Vicky Henderson, Bige Kahraman, Peter Kelly, Antonio Mele, Matthew Rabin, Chris Rogers, Paul Tetlock, Jeffrey Wurgler, the referees, and seminar participants at Arizona State University, Brown University, Cornell University, Harvard University, the LSE, New York University, Princeton University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Texas at Austin, Yale University, the Gerzensee Summer Symposium, and the NBER for helpful comments. We are especially grateful to Xuedong He, Jonathan Ingersoll, and Lawrence Jin for numerous discussions.

Using Neural Data to Test A Theory of Investor Behavior: An Application to Realization Utility.

We use measures of neural activity provided by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to test the "realization utility" theory of investor behavior, which posits that people derive utility directly from the act of realizing gains and losses. Subjects traded stocks in an experimental market while we measured their brain activity. We find that all subjects exhibit a strong disposition effec...

Power Management in a Utility Connected Micro-Grid with Multiple Renewable Energy Sources

As an efficient alternative to fossil fuels, renewable energy sources have attained great attention due to their sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly characteristic. However, as a deficiency, renewable energy sources have low reliability because of their non-deterministic and stochastic generation pattern. The use of hybrid renewable generation systems along with the storag...

The Disposition Effect and Realization Preferences: a Direct Test

This paper develops a new laboratory test of the hypothesis that individual investors have an irrational preference for selling winning stocks vis-à-vis selling losing stocks. In the experiment, subjects invest in a security that bundles a risky asset, whose price evolves in near-continuous time, with a perpetual put option. Optimal behavior is characterized by an upper and a lower selling thre...

Computationally Ecient Stochastic Realization for Internal Multiscale Autoregressive Models*

In this paper we develop a stochastic realization theory for multiscale autoregressive (MAR) processes that leads to computationally ecient realization algorithms. The utility of MAR processes has been limited by the fact that the previously known general purpose realization algorithm, based on canonical correlations, leads to model inconsistencies and has complexity quartic in problem size. O...

Speech rhythm in native and non-native Polish

This paper presents a study on the realization of speech rhythm in native and nonnative Polish. The paper examines the usefulness of %V-ΔC and nPVI-rPVI metrics for rhythm analysis in native and non-native speech and their efficiency in capturing speaker idiosyncrasies in the realization of rhythm. The metric scores are also used to investigate the effect of speakers’ L1 (German or Korean) on t...
